Tadalafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) commercially known as Cialis. Its relatively long half-life (17.5 hours) is the basis for investigations of tadalafil’s daily therapeutic use in relieving pulmonary arterial hypertension and erectile dysfunction.
Cyclic GMP (cGMP) relaxes smooth muscle and increases blood flow to the corpus cavernosum. Tadalafil inhibits phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), and the inhibition of PDE5 enhances erectile function by increasing the amount of cGMP. However, because sexual stimulation is required to initiate the local penile release of nitric oxide, tadalafil’s inhibition of PDE5 will have no effect without direct sexual stimulation.
Each capsule contains 20 mg of Tadalafil.
